ABOUT NASSS

The North American Society for Serbian Studies (NASSS) was founded in 1978 as a non-profit organization to advance research in and promote knowledge of Serbian history and culture. NASSS is affiliated with the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Its membership covers a wide academic network of American, Canadian, Australian and European scholars who specialize in Slavic, Balkan and Eurasian studies. NASSS organizes academic panels, with invited speakers specializing in disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, notably literature, history and art history, film, music, anthropology, sociology and political science. We are dedicated to promoting an inclusive and interdisciplinary scholarly community, whose research branches out into related cultures of the Balkans.

In Memoriam

The President and Executive of NASSS, together with the Editorial Board of Serbian Studies, note with sadness the passing of the Serbian writer, David Albahari (15 March 1948 - 30 July 2023). Albahari was the author of Mamac (1996), which was awarded the NIN Prize. He was the founding editor of the literary journal Pismo and was a translator of Anglo-American literature. Albahari lived in Canada from 1994-2012, when he returned to Belgrade.

With sincere condolences to his family.

War in Ukraine

The President of NASSS and the Editor-in Chief of Serbian Studies lead the Association in categorically condemning the invasion of the sovereign state of Ukraine by Russian military forces. We stand together in solidarity with the suffering of the Ukrainian people and we applaud the people of Russia who oppose this war.
